Science In The News
The modern world is filled with important scientific and environmental issue and events ranging from cloning to global warming. To remain educated and informed, it is critical that citizens follow these issues and events through various forms of media.
Throughout the semester, I expect my kids to engage in this critical thinking by examining science in the news. This gets them used to how science is portrayed in the media and hopefully exposes them to some of the bias out there so they can learn to think for themselves. I use articles that relate to the current topic to show my students that what we are learning has applicability outside the classroom.
If you want to increase scientific literacy and provide applicability, then get your students to read current science publications. There are many sites where you can obtain other relevant articles like Scientific American, your local newspaper, google news, etc. However, if you’re looking for an easy way to stay updated, I also review and post interesting articles here so please check back often for new articles which will be posted at the top of the page. All other articles can be found below.
How do I assess you ask? I have a very simple rubric which I give my students. It clearly outlines the expectations of the task as well as how they will be marked. Click Here to download your Science In The News Assignment.
