The Flipped Classroom – How To Flip Your Class and Increase Student Success

The Flipped Classroom. I flipped my classroom last year and had tremendous success. The students were more engaged in class as we didn’t need to spend all our time going through the notes. Instead, the students watched the videos at home and spent class time either practicing the skills or performing an activity.  This allowed the students to move along at their own pace (as they were watching the videos at home), gain more from the lessons (as I was available for more one-on-one time in class) and get much more hands-on with the content as we had more time available in class.

The Flipped Classroom is very simply to implement.  You don’t even need to create the videos yourself if you don’t want to as there is already an abundance of free videos walking your students through anything you can image.  Simply do a YouTube search for your content area, find a video that is appropriate (no more than 10 minutes long) and post the link for  your students to easily access.  Of course you can create your own videos easily and for free at home (see below for two links to sites which allow you to capture your screen and microphone free of charge). The next day in class you can review the material briefly then get them working.

The two videos below are testimonials from real teachers who have flipped their classrooms.  They talk about why they did it and what kind of results they have seen.  Enjoy and good luck flipping.
